What a couples session is — and isn't

A couples session at Look Gross is a directed studio hour built for two people. It's editorial and character-driven — we light the backdrop for the two of you, style it with your props or ours, and Misty directs every pose while Nani shoots. It slots in under Portraits: same room, same coaching, same edit, pointed at a couple instead of one person.

What it isn't: engagement photos, wedding coverage, an on-location shoot, or a fifteen-minute mini-session. We don't shoot weddings, and that's deliberate — the controlled studio is the whole point. If you want documentary photos of a day, we're not your studio. If you want a considered set of images of the two of you, that's exactly this.

Couples book it for all kinds of reasons: an anniversary, a “just because,” a maternity announcement made together, moving in, a relationship that survived a hard year, best friends who want to be shot like a duo, bandmates, and plenty of LGBTQ+ couples who are tired of every studio defaulting to a bride and a groom.

Why couples book a studio, not a park

There's a version of couples photography that happens at the marina at 6:40pm, everyone squinting into the last of the sun, eleven usable minutes, a stranger jogging through the back of every third frame. It works for some people. It isn't what we do.

Indoors, the light does exactly what we tell it. The background is a decision instead of an accident. Nobody is watching you try to figure out how to hold each other. You can sit down, change clothes, drink water, abandon a look that isn't working, and take the whole thing at the pace you actually need — and nothing gets rained out or rushed because the sun is leaving.

It also means the backdrop is a real choice — a moody gradient, a red drape, clean white — lit properly for the two of you rather than left to whatever the sky is doing. Want more than a backdrop? A full custom set, like the holiday world below, is available as an add-on. Either way, none of it is happening on a sidewalk.

The experience, start to finish

Before the day

• You send an inquiry through the booking page. We reply within 48 hours.
• We talk through the concept — references, wardrobe, and what the photos are actually for. An anniversary print over the bed and a maternity announcement are not the same brief.
• A 50% deposit holds your date. Couples sessions fill fastest around the holidays and Valentine's — book two weeks to a month out.

The day itself

• We're set up before you arrive. Lights, backdrop, any set build — done 30 minutes ahead so your hour is your hour.
• You get the dressing room and vanity to change, touch up, and land in the space for a minute before we start.
• Misty coaches both of you from the first frame — hands, weight, chins, where to look, how to hold each other so it reads as ease instead of a school-dance slow dance.
• Nani shoots and keeps the light moving with you — up to three looks across two setups, depending on session length.
• Music runs the whole time. Bring a playlist. Bring a friend if that makes the room easier.

Afterward

• About a week to your proof gallery — every frame we shot, with our full styled edit: color grading, exposure, contrast, backdrop cleanup, and the cinematic look.
• One to two more weeks if you add retouching on your favorites.
• On a deadline for a gift or an announcement? Say so when you book and we'll work around it.

“We're not photogenic” — the coaching

Almost every couple arrives convinced they're bad at this. One of you hates photos of yourself; the other goes stiff the second a camera comes up. The hour is built for exactly that.

Misty directs both of you the entire time — not “do something natural,” but the actual small adjustments: drop this shoulder, weight on the back foot, hand there not there, look at each other on three. You see the frames land on a monitor a few feet away seconds after we shoot them, so you stop wondering how it's going and start making decisions about it.

Presence, not performance.

The frame we're usually after with a couple isn't the one where you're posing hardest — it's the one two seconds later, when you've both stopped bracing and someone laughed.

What it costs, and why it's worth it

Same pricing as a solo portrait session — a second person doesn't change the rate. Both packages include Nani shooting, Misty coaching both of you, professional backdrop and lighting, and use of the dressing room and vanity. Bring your own props or use what's in the studio. Optional add-ons:

• Custom set build — priced per concept. A full themed set beyond the backdrop — a holiday snow world, an elaborate build. Ask when you inquire.
• Retouching — $15 per photo, chosen after you see your gallery
• Polaroid pack — $50. Instant film shot on set; a physical print you walk out holding
• Medium format film — $50 per roll. 10–12 frames, real grain, scans delivered digitally
• BTS reel — $100. Raw footage plus a cut 30-second reel for Instagram or TikTok

What to bring

• Two or three outfits each. One you feel powerful in, one you feel comfortable in — we usually end up using both.
• Coordinate, don't match. Related tones and textures photograph better than identical outfits.
• Texture over tiny patterns. Knits, leather, denim, velvet, sequins all read beautifully; very fine repeating patterns fight the sensor.
• Shoes. They're in every full-length frame and everyone forgets them.
• Props, yours or ours. Bring an object that's part of your story, matching robes, your dog — or use what's in the studio. Want a full themed set built? Ask when you book; it's a separate quote.
• Your own makeup artist is welcome — just tell us in advance so the dressing room is ready.
